Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q. Can I get off parole early?
A. It is possible. Depending on your crime, your time on parole, your behavior, and your risk level, you may be eligible for commutation and early discharge. Ask your parole officer for more information.

Q. What can I do to make parole easier and discharge early?
A. Get and keep a job (unless disabled), attend and participate in programs, don’t break the law, avoid the wrong crowd and bad influences, don’t use drugs or alcohol, be truthful to your parole officer and tell him/her immediately if you have a problem. Be HONEST with yourself, admit your problems & weaknesses. Commit to changing if you really want a better life.

Q. What if I have a problem?
A. Talk to your parole officer. Ask your parole officer for help before the problem gets too serious. Contact a local counseling resource (see list on this blog).

Q. What is M.R.T.?
A. M.R.T., or Moral Reconation Therapy, is a program designed to improve a person’s decision-making skills and lead a crime-free life. Ask your parole officer about enrolling. Successful completion may improve your chances of getting off parole early.

Q. What if I get arrested?
A. Contact your parole officer before you post bond. An arrest doesn’t always mean that you will return to prison.

Q. What is Electronic Monitoring?
A. Electronic Monitoring (E.M.) is a form of house arrest. Someone on E.M. is required to wear a transmitter on his/her ankle that sends radio signals to a device connected to your phone line. This device notifies your parole officer when you leave and return home. If you are on E.M., your time away from home will be restricted. You are required to pay a daily fee while on E.M. This program may be imposed as a special condition by the Parole Board, or it may be a sanction for parole violation(s).

Q. How long must I be on E.M. if I have that as a special condition?
A. Typically, E.M. lasts for 120 to 180 days (four to six months) unless you are a sex offender. With good behavior you may be permitted to end E.M. after 90 days.

Q. How do I pay my parole fee?
A. Bring a money order for $30 to your parole officer. Be sure to put your name and inmate (EF)number on the money order. Payment is due on the first of every month unless you meet requirements for exemption.
